VALPANERA – The wines of The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region

By admin | Published: May 26, 2010

“Vinum laetificat cor Hominis”  “wine brings happiness to people’s hearts”

And so the wines of Valpenara, with support from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, has dedicated its resources to revive the production of Refosco dal Peduncolo Roso. This ancient, autochthonous type of vine originated in this region and has found the perfect environment for its development here on our land. There vineyards are located near the ancient Roman port of Aquileia. The combination of the soil, an alluvial mix of clay and sand, and the special climatic conditions create the essential conditions for the production of a classic Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is sub-variety of the Refosco grape and derives its name from its red stems. Like Refosco grape the origins of Refosco dal Peduncolo Roso are not completely known but the current evidence suggests that it is indigenous to Italy. Recent DNA profiling confirms that it was a parent ot Marzemino, which is a grape variety of San Michele all’Adige region of Trento. "Giacomo Casanova(1725-1798), famous for his amorous exploits, wrote in his book"Historie de ma vie; The good woman served a delightful meal of excellent fish dressed with olive oil, and gave us some Refosco todrink that I found exquisite"There are seven wines in their classic range, these include Rosso Valpaneara, Bianco Valpanera, Refosoc DOC and Refosco Superiore and in there Dated Range Refosco Riserva and Valpanera Alma.

The “Rosso di Valpanera IGT" is a blend of Cabernet-Merlot-Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. It has a deep ruby red with violet reflections, with spicy intense aromas of pepper, cinnamon(characteristic of wood ageing), on the palate there are black fruits (plums) and spicy notes as with the nose, the tannins are to the fore but the wine is well balanced , this is the style of the grape variety with a medium plus body. They wine is drinking well but it will age and it will be interesting to come back to this wine in year or two and see its development.Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso DOC , made from 100% Refosco dal Peduncolo. Deep ruby red with violet reflections, with a bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and brushwood, on the palate you get a real sense of these fruits plus the tannins, balanced with good length and finish, drinking well now but just like the Valpanera IGT this will also benefit from some time in bottle and the recommend 3 plus years.

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Superiore DOC , also made from a 100% Refosco, the wine spends 18 months in French oak Barriques and a further 6 months in bottle before release. Ruby red with garnet reflections, with complex aromas of black fruits, spice, tobacco and coffee. On the palate the wine as excellent structure and a smooth well rounded wine balanced smooth tannins and long on the finish. This wine also cellars well plus 5 years.

Valpaneara Alma DOC, is a blend of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso-Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot, similar to the last wine it is also aged for in French barrique for 18 months and 6 months in bottle before release. On the nose there is more fruits of the Forrest which come from been blended with the Cabernet and Merlot and delicate spices. A full bodied wine which some times can finish slightly green on the palate and a slight hint of bitterness but this mellows with age and this wine also benefits from cellaring for 5 plus years.

From listen to our customers that have tried some of these wines the favourites at present lean towards the Valpaneara Rosso and the Refosco Superiore and the Refosco Riserva.

Of the whites the only one which I have sampled was the “Valpanera Bianco IGT, which is a blend of Chardonnay-Sauvignon-Tocai Friulano. Straw yellow with green highlights, fresh and fruity aromas. A well balanced and full bodied white, which reflects the blend of grape varieties, with a good balanced finish . The wine can be enjoyed for 2-3 years following its release.

They have a Chardonnay, a Sauvignon and a Chardonnay Carato DOC which receives some oak ageing and lees batonage . I have yet the pleasure to taste these but the last one I think would be well worth a try and be of great interest.

The point of interest here lies in there difference, the Grape variety is one which we are not all familiar with and if you have a sense of curiosity and adventure, you wont go far wrong here. They are different , and wines of note that stretch your taste buds, the take you away from the norm and this is where Italian and Greek wines can benefit as the develop wines from grape varieties which are indigenous to there regions.

“Wines brings happiness to people’s hearth” These will make you question more and expand your knowledge and taste buds. !

This week step out of your comfort zone and buy one different bottle cook some thing new and experience different tastes and pleasures.
